Japan’s logistics giant, Nippon Express (NX Group), has planned a major and significant investment in Gujarat’s Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), also known as Dholera Smart City. This step is primarily aimed at supporting India’s semiconductor mission.
Here are the key details regarding this investment and planning:
Focus on Semiconductor Supply Chain: Nippon Express’s main objective is to provide world-class logistics support to the upcoming $11 billion Tata-PSMC Semiconductor Mega Fab and other tech companies in Dholera. Dholera is now being developed as India’s “Semicon City,” which requires a highly advanced supply chain for chip manufacturing.
Partnership with Nagase & Co.: For this project, Nippon Express has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with another major Japanese materials company, Nagase & Co. They will work together on the following:
Nagase & Co.: Will source and distribute high-purity chemicals, gases, and essential raw materials.
Nippon Express (NX Group): Will handle the specialized transportation and storage of these ultra-sensitive semiconductor materials. (Chip components require vibration-free and temperature-controlled trucks and containers).
Specialized Warehousing: Chip manufacturing uses many hazardous and sensitive materials. To handle this, the NX Group will set up “Dangerous Goods” and dust-free warehouses in Dholera. This will ensure “Just-in-Time (JIT)” delivery, so that raw materials reach the factory without delay, significantly reducing inventory costs.
Land Allotment in Dholera and Future Targets: In September 2026, Katsuhito Kobayashi, CEO of Nippon Express for the South Asia & Oceania Region, confirmed that they have secured land in Dholera. Their goal is to triple their business in India by 2028, reaching approximately $380 million (¥60 billion).
Direct Benefits from Dholera’s Infrastructure: Nippon Express chose this location because the new Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway and the upcoming Dholera International Airport will make this high-tech supply chain faster and more seamless, easing import and export processes. In simple terms, Nippon Express is investing in Dholera to become the supply chain and transportation backbone for upcoming major semiconductor and manufacturing companies. This will further strengthen Dholera’s journey toward becoming a global tech and manufacturing hub.
