FUJIFILM India has officially signed a MoU with the GSEM Government of Gujarat Fujifilm building a semiconductor materials manufacturing facility in the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR). June 30, 2026
The MoU was formally signed today, June 30, 2026, during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Vadodara.
The proposed production base will be located in Dholera SIR, which is rapidly emerging as India’s premier greenfield smart city and a dedicated hub for semiconductor manufacturing.
What They Will Produce: Instead of manufacturing the microchips themselves, Fujifilm’s Electronic Materials division focuses on producing the advanced chemical formulations and raw materials essential for the semiconductor fabrication process. They are a critical global supplier for wafer processing and flat panel displays.
Business Strategy, While the MoU is the first formal step to evaluate the Dholera plant, Fujifilm has previously indicated they are exploring flexible operational pathways, which could include a wholly-owned production unit, licensed manufacturing by Indian firms, or a joint venture with existing semiconductor players.
Strategic Impact & Goals
Reducing Import Dependency: Currently, India imports the vast majority of the specialized chemicals needed for chip fabrication. Localizing the production of these critical raw materials will drastically improve supply chain resilience for domestic chipmakers.
Boosting “Make in India”: The initiative heavily aligns with India’s national push to become a self-reliant, global semiconductor hub.
Strengthening Dholera’s Ecosystem: With major players like Tata already investing heavily in Dholera’s semiconductor infrastructure, adding a top-tier materials supplier like Fujifilm helps complete the localized supply chain puzzle.
Leadership Perspectives
Koji Wada (Managing Director, FUJIFILM India): Noted that the MoU marks a major milestone in Fujifilm’s journey, stating it brings them “a step closer to realizing our plans for investment in Dholera.” He emphasized that supporting critical technologies in India will contribute to the nation’s broader economic and technological advancement.
Abhi Shekhar Singh (National Head – Strategy & Business Development, Electronic Materials): Highlighted that Fujifilm manages chemical formulations that power the most critical processes of semiconductor technology, and that bringing this expertise to India will support the country’s long-term semiconductor goals.
