Ahmedabad – Dholera High Speed Metro Project Rs. 20667 Crore Approved.
The Indian Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a massive semi high-speed double-line rail project connecting Sarkhej (Ahmedabad) to Dholera. Set to be completed before the prospective 2036 Olympics, this project promises to significantly alter the region’s lifestyle, transportation, and economic landscape.
Key Project Details: Distance & Cost: The rail route will span 134 kilometers with an estimated project cost of ₹20,667 crore. Timeline The project is targeted for completion by 2030-2031. Speed: Trains on this route will operate at a speed of 220 km/h. Travel Time: Sarkhej to Dholera: 34 minutes. Sabarmati to Dholera: 48 minutes.
Strategic Foresight and Execution: No New Land Acquisition: A major highlight of this project is that it requires absolutely zero new land acquisition, a factor that typically delays large infrastructure projects.
15-Year Planning: During the town planning of Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) 15 years ago, a 30-meter wide strip of land parallel to the 109 km Expressway was already acquired specifically for this future rail network Connectivity
Enhancements Integrated Hubs: The rail line will seamlessly connect the Sabarmati Bullet Train station, the Ahmedabad Metro, and the Gandhigram Railway Station directly to the Dholera International Airport and the Lothal National Maritime Complex.
Passenger& Freight Integration: The project will feature double lines for passenger services alongside a Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) forthe rapid movement of industrial goods. Future Expansion: The rail network is designed to eventually extend further to Bhavnagar.
Economic and Social Impact: Industrial Boom: Dubbed a “Future Corridor,” this network is expected to cement Dholera SIR (which is twice the size of Ahmedabad) as a world-class manufacturing hub, particularly for hi-tech sectors like semiconductors, defense, aerospace, and renewable energy.
Massive Investments & Jobs: Global giants like Tata and TEPL (Tower Semiconductor) are initiating investments worth ₹6 lakh crore in the area. The fully active Dholera SIR and the hi-tech sectors are projected to create approximately 8 lakh new jobs.
Tourism & Traffic: The semi high-speed train will ease traffic congestion on the SG Highway and provide a significant boost to heritage tourism at Lothal. Geographical Equality: The seamless transport link between Saurashtra and Ahmedabad over the next 5-7 years is expected to bridge geographical and socio-economic disparities in the region.
